Throwing shapes
This is how you find her: serene and unruffled. She remembers this time last year. The World Championships in Osaka were on the horizon and she had this same sense of tranquillity, a blissful disconnectedness from the hype and buildup around her. She had the Nationals and other tournaments to focus on. Life proceeded as normal. The elephant that was a major championship hadn't invaded her private space yet.
The routine is all now. A year on nothing has changed apart from the fact that she no longer combines her pursuit of athletic excellence with the punishing demands of a fulltime nursing career. No more standing on her feet all day, burning energy she could keep for athletics. No more feeling wrecked in the evenings as she arrives for a gruelling training session.
It's a solitary enough existence but she doesn't mind that. In the mornings, she drives to Dunboyne Athletic Club, hauls her equipment out of the car and spends a couple of hours finetuning her technique, filling in the holes she makes from the bucket of sand she always carries with her. Later she heads to the gym in DCU where she works on her fitness with her coach, Dave Fagan. For the rest of the time, she'll chill out at home in Santry, as oblivious as she can be to the hum of city life around her.
"In some ways I'm glad to be up here," she says of life outside her native Callan, Co Kilkenny, "away from people who know me. I can just get on with things. I know people mean well but you're hearing it every day. 'When are you going?' 'How do you think you'll do?' I got a card from my home parish wishing me well and that was nice, but I prefer to be away from all the fuss."
Up here she knows she's something of a curiosity, that girl who does the throwing, who they occasionally read about in the paper or see in that AIB ad on the television. "My name is Eileen O'Keeffe and I'm a qualified theatre nurse. I'm also a professional athlete," she says on the screen, staring in a suitably dreamy fashion into the distance.
Mostly they know her, though, as a caged prisoner of her circumstances. It is an old Irish joke: the hammer thrower with nowhere to throw, the vagabond athlete hauling herself and her equipment around, seeking an inn with no fullup sign hanging outside. She doesn't want to make more of this than she has to, you understand. Not with Beijing looming anyway. But it is there nonetheless; persistent and unavoidable.
This morning she has news. On Tuesday they finished building the new throwing circle in Santry. She hopes to be able to use it soon. Whoever built the old one, she thinks, had little notion of what they were doing. Instead of the smooth surface she needed, it crumbled away on top as she spun. She's certain that's what caused an old hip injury to flare up. She had an injection and she thinks she's fine now. But at such a sensitive time it isn't what you want.
Like the inches she seeks on the throwing field, progress is slow and incremental. "I can't really say the system has contributed to where I am today," she says. "Hopefully it will be different in the future. It was a curious footnote of the story that almost all of them hailed from within a 40orso mile radius around Limerick and Cork. Like O'Keeffe says, it didn't just happen yesterday. By 1960, the light was fading. That year in Rome John Lawlor became the last Irish athlete to qualify for an Olympic hammer throwing final. Agonisingly, he missed out on a medal by five inches after enduring a disrupted passage to the finals. Lawlor had grown up on a diet of stories about Flanagan and the other socalled Whales who had emigrated to America and Canada earlier in the century. In a way he was the last of that great line.
Why the sport should have fallen into such a sharp decline is difficult to say. Other countries improved, Ireland went backwards. "I'd often go to Hungary," says Ronnie Long, a coach and athletics historian. "And they'd tell you more there about the Shamrock throwers than you'd hear at home." In Eastern Europe, they had an insatiable thirst for history and knowledge. In Ireland, appetites and tastes changed.
Four years before Lawlor's heroic efforts in Rome, Ronnie Delany won 1,500m gold in Melbourne and soon it would become clear that the track was king. "We became like secondclass citizens," says a former Irish Olympian hammer thrower. "When it came to grants and facilities, we usually got shafted. Paddy McGrath competed at the Sydney Olympics in 2000 and coaches now in New York. It doesn't surprise him that Ireland should be able to produce a worldclass female hammer thrower. It occurred to him some time ago that girls often showed more potential than boys. "I just feel girls can pick it up more easily," he says. "The standard among the men is so high now that it's difficult to make that initial breakthrough. Girls can make progress more quickly."
He was back in Ireland in April and saw progress but also the ageold problems. Not enough talentspotting, nowhere near enough facilities. A year ago he heard they were going to install a throwing circle at the University of Limerick for a promising young female thrower he was advising. He spoke to her recently and was astonished to learn nothing had been done. It is why he advises talented kids to think seriously of the US scholarship route.
In ways O'Keeffe emerged in spite of the history that preceded her, but she is not entirely detached from it. A while ago she got a call from a son of Pat O'Callaghan, asking how she was faring and wishing her well for the future, and she appreciated the sense of connection that suggested. She knows that when she steps into the circle in Beijing next month, she'll be creating her own piece of history. That gives her a buzz too.
She's just turned 27, 10 years throwing the hammer now, and she talks in a mature, selfconfident way of Beijing being a steppingstone for London in 2012. "I know a lot of people talk about me being an Olympic medal hope," she says. "But I try to be realistic. [Olga] Kuznekova was 33 when she won the gold medal in Athens. I'll be 31 in 2012. I think more of the experience I'll gain here rather than putting myself in a pressure situation."
Although she was sixth at the World Championships in Osaka last year, she still recognises how far she has to travel to close the gap between her and the world's best. Years ago she would pore through books and study videos, picking up ideas from other throwers and adapting them to her own technique. And now she was standing beside them in Osaka, keeping pace with them and how wonderfully weird it felt. Knowing she belonged in this exalted company.
The question she faces for the future is where she goes next. In January, she spent a week at Yuri Sedykh's throwing school in Paris and found it of limited use.
